The Food Safety and Regulatory Authority of India (FSSAI) has warned to take strict action against e-commerce forums for not following the Food Safety Protocol. The warning was given after a meeting of FSSAI Chief Executive Officer with 70 representatives of major e-commerce forums.

According to the statement, FSSAI CEO G Kamala Vardhan Rao told representatives of major e-commerce companies that it would be taken very seriously for not following the food security protocol and strict action will be taken in such cases. He underlined the importance of food security in the rapidly growing e-commerce market.

Instructions of FSSAI CEO G Kamala Vardhan Rao
In the case, Rao directed all e-commerce units to show its FSSAI license/registration number prominently on every receipt, invoice and cash memo given to consumers. The regulator has asked e-commerce units to detail all the warehouses and storage centers associated with their operations on the FOSCOS portal. The meeting also discussed the possibility of displaying the expiry date/date of use for food products on the consumer interfaces.
Rao instructed all these companies to strictly follow the hygiene and food safety protocols in all their warehouses and storage centers. Also, all warehouses associated with e-commerce operations should be registered or licensed by FSSAI.
