Housefull franchise film Housefull-5 is getting a lot of love from the audience. Producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director Tarun Mansukhani are behind giving such a long star cast on the screen, the dose of murder mystery with comedy. Tarun has come in direction after a long gap and has given the audience a family entertainer film. Tarun has shared the experience from Dainik Bhaskar from getting ‘Housefull-5’ to construction.
How did ‘Housefull-5’ come to you?
After the end of Kovid, I received a call by Deepti Jindal, CEO of Nadiadwala Grandson. She said that she wants to meet me. We met on coffee, there he said that we want you to direct ‘Housefull-5’. I was a little shocked. Suddenly such a big franchise is offering me. I asked them that you are sure? He said yes. You come to the office and meet Sajid sir. I went to meet Sajid, there he told me how you watch this film, write it in two pages.
I went home and sent them two pages in just three-four hours, sent them. They read that mail, we met the next day again. Sajid told me that we are thinking in one direction. Work together I never thought in life that I would get such a big franchise. Such a large cast and supportive producer will be found. He will give me the responsibility of India’s biggest comedy franchise on his 57th birthday. This is the first franchise, whose fifth film has come.
The ‘Housefull’ franchise is known for its comedy. How did the idea of murder mystery come with comedy?
This entire idea was of Sajid sir. He already had this whole story that there are three jolly in the film, they come and then there is a murder. After signing my film, he made me sit and told that the film will have two climax. Which he has thought of thirty years ago. I found his climax idea mind blowing. I was already excited due to comedy-mark mystery. A film was to be made by combining two different genres. I have never worked on the murder mystery, so I had no information. I was very excited thinking about the whole process.
You have also worked with a long starcast before. But this film has 19 stars. How did you handle such a big cast?
I do not think that any director would have thought that he would handle 19 big stars together in a film. People do not have so many stars in their career as in one of my films. All its credit used to go to Sajid sir. If I thought anything, he would fulfill it. U The person in front used to say yes only after hearing the name of the houseful. Sajid used to say to him, hey listen to the role. The answer comes from the front that you are in it and there is a houseful franchise, so much. Everyone has given this film only love.
Whose idea was the idea of adding veteran actors like Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, Nana Patekar in this film?
There were already only 6 people in the story, who were also in the old franchisees. The rest of the characters in the film were joined after writing the most slowly. When it came to the role of the Board of Director, Sir conveyed Fardeen’s name. I did not even think this name. Similarly, he told the name of Dino Moriya for the role of Baby. These two were quite good. When the role of Baba-Bidu was written, then it felt that who would come in it now. Sir said, take Sanjay and Jackie. Hearing this was my first reaction, we are thinking so big.
I thought there would be some new faces but talked to Sanjay-Jacket and both of them agreed. Similarly, when it came to Serious Cop, Sajid sir took the name of Nana Patekar. I met Nana Sir. Before meeting them, everyone told me that they are very angry. Let’s scold anything but I find them a very cute person. He met very warmly. I did not see more lovely person than him.
Tarun Mansukhani said that the experience of directing ‘Housefull 5’ was Mind Blowing.
How was the set of ‘Housefull-5’ and the atmosphere?
There was only fun on this set. If you are not having fun then you can go from this film. You are not needed here. If there is a mistake on the set, something of the set fell, there was no load of anything. Everyone used to come together, fix things and the film was shot amidst fun. Maxim came to me on the set of this film.
How was the experience of directing Nana sir, Sanjay Dutt and Jackie Shroff?
Their experience of directing them was Mind Blowing. Never felt that these are such big stars. These were very simple, fun on the set and always cracked the joke. But still they have a swag. Both have amazing comedy timing, which I did not know.
The comedy has a combination of Akshay and Ritesh Deshmukh pair.
Both of them have done a lot of work with each other. They no longer need to discus things. They understand things by looking at each other. Sometimes Ritesh laughs at Akshay and understands them. Then the two create something together, which is amazing.
Akshay has mentioned in many interviews that his viral meme scenes are made immediately on the set. Did he create anything on the set of Housefull?
The entire track of Kanchi is made by Akshay. I remember that when his introduction scene was being shot, he called me and said that Kanchi is from Nepal, because he called him Nepali? I told him that I do not know whether Nargis will be able to do it or not. Akshay told me that there will be no tension. He then called Nargis on the camera. We sat there and wrote the whole again. Akshay recorded the entire line in the vice note and gave it to Nargis and said now rehearsal. We did not even tell anyone. When she came on the set and started speaking, the entire unit was falling on the set.
Do you think your film is a family entertainment and because of this people are turning to theater?
Yes, of course. As you also said, we needed to laugh the most. In the cinema hall, where an entire community is watching a film. After the lights are off, there is a sound of laughing from a corner or a scary film. This can only happen in the theater. You will not get this feeling at home. You put any sound system or screen in the house, but the theater will not get enthusiasm.
Some critics are describing your film as an example, cries. Want to say something to such people?
These are the same people who go to the dhaba and ask for salads. I do not give such people a sense. Write what you have to speak or write, talk numbers. The audience gives real feedback and we are getting love from there.
Any star in the bucket list, who has a desire to work with?
There is only one in my list, Amitabh Bachchan. I want me to get a chance to direct them only once. I will always keep writing something, where I can write a scene for them and do it.
