Director Tarun Mansukhani’s film ‘Housefull 5’ is very much liked by the audience. Tarun, who has assisted Karan Johar in the films ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum’, started the direction with Karan’s film ‘Dostana’. Recently, during a conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, Taran shared the story of ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and said that once Karan Johar has scolded him. Tarun also shared an anecdote related to Shahrukh Khan.

Question- What is the story of Karan Johar and you, please tell me?
answer- I was working as an assistant director in Karan Johar’s film ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’. When we were making a film, no one felt that it would become such a big film. When this film was a blockbuster, I was a superstar in my mind. My family members were treating me like a star. At that time, I started feeling that I have made this film. The rest of the world is stupid. With this attitude I stayed six months when Karan scolded me one day. I told me that you have gone mad. He told me that no human being would have been an entire film. It is just a small part of the film.
Karan explained to me with an example of how the writer, producer, cameraman, actors and each human of set are important. Then he told me that before every word, I would say please and later thank you. For example, if I asked for water on the set, I used to say that Dada please give one water. After getting the water, I used to call him thank you again. Today, both these words have become so normal for me that please-wealth comes out for everything.

Tarun Mansukhani made his direction debut with the film ‘Dostana’.
Question- What did you learn from Shahrukh Khan?
answer- I wrote the script of ‘Dostana’, casting was done for the film. Before the shooting started, a Shahrukh called me and said that whatever you have thought about the film is just one percent. 99 percent of your job is to handle people on the set. If you have not yet learned this from Karan, then you will not be able to make the picture good. Then I realized what my job is. Directions must come. Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani are all big stars because they have given personal memory to people.
Question- You have worked for a long time with Dharma Productions. Do you think Karan Johar makes a premature film?
answer- Yes, of course. Karan has always taken a risk at a level. He cast an unknown girl in the lead in ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’. He brought Shahrukh-Salman with his first film. In the next film ‘Kabhi Khushi-Khushi Gum’, he kept such a big star cast, which no one could think at that time.
I believe that he has taken a risk in every film to an extent. During ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’, he had grown as a filmmaker and he wanted to say something. She was not just a Rawcom or family film. As a director, he was taking a separate tech, who was a learning thing as an assistant, how the story is going. You realize that everything does not happen in black and white. There is also gray between these two. I think it is better to be ahead of time than being on time.

Question- Kanta Bai’s character in ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ waged a discussion. Can this character be considered the beginning of your film ‘Dostana’?
answer- Yes, the idea of ’Dostana’ came from Kanta Ben itself. I got the idea from this film why Kanta Ben did not adopt homosexuality? This thinking is a whole story in itself. The story for me is why the mother does not accept this. If you cannot be comfortable at home then how will you be out. For me, that scene of ‘Dostana’ was the most important, in which Priyanka explains to her mother. She says that whatever God does, does it for the right. Then how can it be wrong. Then it is realized that perhaps it is not wrong. I did not want to give a speech through my film. My attempt was to make people think with entertainment.
