Maharashra Civic Elections: … So there will be no surprise, Prithviraj Chavan, Maharashtra CM, gave signs, Congress will play ‘Congress’ in civic elections

Mumbai. Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has said that if the Congress contests the municipal elections in the state including Mumbai at the end of this year, then it will not be surprising. Chavan also targeted Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis about the state’s law and order after some incidents of alleged attacks on people for not speaking Marathi by Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers in an interview to ‘PTI video’.

In response to a question, he said, “The Congress party’s alliance is from the Shiv Sena (Ubatha) and NCP (SP) in the ‘India’ alliance. If they want to take any other party, a party with equal ideology, it is their case.” He said, ‘But if they want to combine with such people who are originally opposed to the ideology of Congress, the ideology of secularism, the ideology written by Ambedkar in the Constitution, then we will not accept it.’

Chavan said that in the recent Congress meeting held in Delhi at Mumbai and other places, he gave his views before a committee, which will decide whether to contest elections under an alliance with members of the ‘India’ alliance or separately. He said, ‘Even in the past, we had tied up for the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, but the local body elections were contested separately, and if the Congress party decides to contest the civic elections of Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur separately, I would not be surprised.’

On Tuesday, activists of MNS and other groups led a protest march in Meera Bhayandar area of Thane near Mumbai to protect Marathi Asmita. Earlier, political rhetoric increased after the attack on a shopkeeper after refusing to talk in Marathi. When asked about the protest, Chavan claimed, ‘One thing is clear, it is the policy of the Central Government, on which the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) emphasizes. He wants a nation-one language, one nation-one religion, one nation-one election. This mentality is like the 1930s Germany, Hitler’s Germany.

Chavan said that he is still trying to ‘impose this mindset’. He said that now, why the people of Maharashtra stood up against the central government policy, because of this, Hindi language is to be imposed from class one (in schools). He said, ‘We are not against Hindi language, we are against imposing it from class one. You have implemented it even after class five and class six. You cannot put the burden of three different languages in the beginning on a six-year-old child. There are not enough teachers, do not have enough textbooks, and this will weaken the grip on English or mother tongue.

The Congress leader said that that’s why the entire people of Maharashtra opposed the imposition of Hindi in one voice. He said that finally the Chief Minister and the state government realized that even if the central government wanted, it would be difficult to implement Hindi from class one in Maharashtra, so they pulled back their steps and canceled the policy. Referring to the joint rally of Shiv Sena (Ubatha) chief Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin Raj Thackeray organized after the government withdrew the order to teach Hindi in primary classes, Chavan said that now some people want to celebrate and want to take political advantage from it, then they can do so.

Chavan said, “If two brothers BMC (Brihanmumbai Metropolitan Municipality) come together to contest elections, it is welcome.” In response to a question about Meera Bhayandar’s incident, Chavan said that she does not understand why the protests are going on. He said, “The Maharashtra government has withdrawn the order, the people of Maharashtra have accepted what he wanted, what Shiv Sena and MNS wanted have been approved.” He said, ‘If they want to celebrate, then celebrate, but you cannot take law and order in your hands.’

Chavan said, ‘You cannot beat those who do not know Marathi.’ He said, ‘Therefore, I request the Chief Minister that the image of Maharashtra is being formed as a very weak, decision-making government, where no one is listening to each other. An MLA or minister of Shinde (Shiv Sena) group is disregarding the orders of the Chief Minister. Therefore, all this is a message that everything is not good in Maharashtra. Chavan claimed that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is busy saving his alliance and the minister is behaving arbitrarily.

He said, ‘But we will not allow anyone to take law and order in our hands. The Chief Minister will have to take action, whether it is the incident of Meera Bhayandar or at the national level… a BJP MP has wrongly talked. Home Minister Amit Shah should take action against that MP, but he will not do so, because he is running his agenda. BJP Lok Sabha member Nishikant Dubey from Jharkhand had said in a post on ‘X’, ‘If those who kill Hindi speaking people in Mumbai, then kill Urdu speakers in Maharashtra. Is a dog also a lion in your house? Who is a dog, who is a lion, decide yourself.
