A big controversy has arisen over the visit of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar in Ernakulam, Kerala. The reason for this is that a shocking order of the Health Department, in which three government doctors were posted as ‘Food Testing Officer’ during Dhankhar’s visit.

Usually during the VIP tours, doctors are included in the medical team, but this time he was entrusted with the responsibility of checking the quality of food served to the Vice President. Surprised by this order, the doctors kept distance from this duty and the Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) strongly opposed this instruction.

Doctors rejected duty

KGMOA said that the work of checking the quality of food should be done by trained and qualified professionals in this field, not from the doctors practicing… an association official said, ‘Doctors did not perform this duty because we should not take such responsibility. We have lodged our strong protest in front of the officials concerned. We will not take such duty in future also.

For fear of protest, the district medical officials also did not try to insist on this duty to the doctors.

Which doctors were given responsibility?

An Assistant Surgeon of the Family Health Center in Kodanadu, Ernakulam was deployed for food testing at the airline catering company CAFS in Nedumbaseri. Apart from this, a woman medical officer of the district hospital was asked for similar duty at Aluva Guest House and another medical officer at Ernakulam Guest House.

Resentment among doctors

The three doctors were surprised when this order was received from the District Medical Officer (DMO) of Ernakulam. KGMOA has demanded the Health Department to withdraw such instructions, calling this order impractical and derogatory.

This matter has now become a matter of discussion. No official statement has come from the Health Department and the district administration. KGMOA has warned that if such orders are re -issued in the future, they will take more strict steps.
